Billy Graham’s Biography
Billy Graham (1918–2018) was an American evangelist, Christian teacher, and author who spent more than six decades preaching the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Born William Franklin Graham Jr. in Charlotte, North Carolina, he became known for large evangelistic crusades, radio and television broadcasts, Christian books, and international missions. He founded the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association in 1950, helping build a ministry that carried his preaching through public meetings and mass media. His central message focused on Jesus Christ, repentance, forgiveness, and salvation through faith. His sermons, books, and ministry records remain important resources for studying modern evangelical Christianity.
Early Life and Background
William Franklin Graham Jr. was born on November 7, 1918, on a dairy farm outside Charlotte, North Carolina. He was the oldest of four children in a family that attended church and valued Christian faith.
Growing up during the Great Depression, Graham learned the value of hard work on the family farm. He also developed a love of reading, an interest that continued throughout his life.
In 1934, when he was 15, Graham attended revival meetings led by the traveling evangelist Mordecai Ham. During these meetings, he made a personal commitment to follow Jesus Christ. This decision became a turning point in his life and helped shape his future ministry.
Call to Ministry
After his conversion, Graham became increasingly committed to Christian service. He studied at Florida Bible Institute, where he received training that helped prepare him for ministry. He later attended Wheaton College in Illinois, graduating in 1943 with a degree in anthropology.
Graham was ordained in 1939 by Peniel Baptist Church in Palatka, Florida. After his studies, he served as a pastor before joining Youth for Christ, a Christian organization that focused on reaching young people and military personnel.
Through Youth for Christ, he gained experience preaching at public meetings across the United States and in Europe. These early years helped prepare him for the larger evangelistic campaigns that would later define his ministry.
While studying at Wheaton College, he met Ruth McCue Bell, whose parents were medical missionaries in China. They married on August 13, 1943, and Ruth became an important partner in his life and ministry.
Ministry and Work
Graham’s ministry reached a turning point in 1949 during a citywide evangelistic crusade in Los Angeles. The meetings were originally planned for three weeks but continued for eight weeks. Public attention grew, and Graham became widely known as an evangelist.
In 1950, he founded the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association (BGEA). The organization helped coordinate his evangelistic campaigns and develop ways to share the Gospel through radio, television, print, film, and other media.
Graham preached in public crusades in many countries. These meetings brought together local churches and Christian workers to support evangelism and invite people to respond to the message of Jesus Christ.
His ministry also included the Hour of Decision radio program, newspaper columns, the magazine Decision, and films produced to communicate the Christian message. These efforts allowed his teaching to reach people who could not attend his meetings in person.
In later years, Graham continued to support evangelism through recorded messages, televised events, books, and outreach programs. His final major public crusade took place in New York in 2005.
Teaching and Ministry Focus
The central theme of Billy Graham’s preaching was the Gospel of Jesus Christ. He regularly spoke about humanity’s need for salvation, repentance from sin, forgiveness through Christ, and the call to place faith in Him.
His sermons often addressed the cross and resurrection of Jesus, the authority of Scripture, prayer, Christian living, and the hope of eternal life.
Graham’s preaching generally used direct language and clear invitations for listeners to make a personal response to the Gospel. He worked with churches from different Protestant traditions to organize evangelistic meetings, while keeping the message of salvation through Jesus Christ at the center of his ministry.
His approach combined public preaching with follow-up efforts intended to connect people who responded to the Gospel with local churches and Christian communities.
Major Contributions
One of Graham’s major contributions was the development of large evangelistic campaigns supported by cooperation among local churches. His crusades became a model for public evangelism in many places.
He also helped expand the use of mass media in Christian outreach. Radio broadcasts, television programs, films, books, and other publications allowed his ministry to reach people beyond the locations where he preached.
The Billy Graham Evangelistic Association became the main organization through which these efforts were coordinated. It also supported other forms of evangelism and outreach.
The Billy Graham Library in Charlotte, North Carolina, preserves exhibits and historical materials about his life and ministry. The Billy Graham Archive and Research Center also provides access to historical records and sermon materials for researchers, evangelists, and students of Christian ministry.
