About This Message

A Nation at the Crossroads is a classic sermon by Billy Graham, preached at the Portland Crusade in Portland, Oregon, on the choice every person and every nation must eventually make.

Dr. Graham takes his listeners to Mount Carmel and 1 Kings 18. A nation has fallen as low as it has ever been, a throne is corrupted under Ahab, Jezebel, and Baal worship, and one lone prophet, Elijah, stands before the people and asks the question that has never expired: “How long halt ye between two opinions?” From there the message follows the contest on the mountain, where the God who answers by fire proves Himself the living God.

Dr. Graham then moves from the ancient story to the present. He looks at the empty promise of success, using the disillusionment of a famous film star to show that wealth and fame cannot fill the longing of the human heart. He sets out the two ways, two masters, and two destinies Jesus described, and speaks honestly about the price of choosing Christ and the testing that follows. The message closes with a public invitation to make a personal commitment to Jesus Christ.

About the Preacher

William “Billy” F. Graham Jr. (1918–2018) was raised on a dairy farm in Charlotte, North Carolina. He made a commitment to faith at age 15 during a revival, was ordained in 1939, and earned a degree from Wheaton College in 1943, where he married Ruth McCue Bell.

After pastoring in Illinois and serving as the first full-time evangelist for Youth for Christ International, he rose to national prominence through the 1949 Los Angeles Crusade. That launched decades of global outreach, including crusades in London, New York City, Seoul, and Rio de Janeiro, and over his lifetime he preached live to nearly 215 million people in more than 185 countries and territories. In 1950 he founded the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association (BGEA).
