About This Message
Why I Am an Optimist is a classic sermon by Billy Graham, preached at the Portland Crusade in Portland, Oregon, on where a believer’s hope comes from when the world looks dark.
Dr. Graham opens from Psalm 102:5–7 and its strange picture of a pelican in the wilderness, an owl of the desert, and a lonely sparrow on a housetop. He uses it to describe the weariness and loneliness many people feel, then sets it against the age he is preaching in. Quoting Dickens on “the best and the worst of times,” he describes a world searching for meaning and security.
From there the message follows a clear path. It looks at the problem of sin, recalling the four times Jesus told people to “be of good cheer,” and at how God forgives the sinner and remains just through the cross. It turns to the victory believers have over the world system, and to the certain return of Jesus Christ. Dr. Graham’s optimism is not a mood or a political outlook; it rests on what God has done and what He has promised to do. The message closes with a call to choose whom you will serve, and a public invitation to receive Christ.
About the Preacher
William “Billy” F. Graham Jr. (1918–2018) was raised on a dairy farm in Charlotte, North Carolina. He made a commitment to faith at age 15 during a revival, was ordained in 1939, and earned a degree from Wheaton College in 1943, where he married Ruth McCue Bell.
After pastoring in Illinois and serving as the first full-time evangelist for Youth for Christ International, he rose to national prominence through the 1949 Los Angeles Crusade. That launched decades of global outreach, including crusades in London, New York City, Seoul, and Rio de Janeiro, and over his lifetime he preached live to nearly 215 million people in more than 185 countries and territories. In 1950 he founded the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association (BGEA).

Key Scripture
Psalm 102:5–7
“I’m like a pelican in the wilderness. I’m like an owl of the desert. I watch, and am as sparrow alone upon the housetop.”
Dr. Graham begins with this honest picture of weariness and loneliness, then shows that the longing behind it is one that Christ alone can answer.
