About This Message

When God Gets Your Attention is a classic sermon by Billy Graham, preached at the Portland Crusade in Portland, Oregon, on a changing, dangerous world and the God, the Word, and the way of salvation that never change.

Graham takes his text from Hebrews 12:27–29 and opens with a line someone painted on a rooftop after Hurricane Andrew: “Okay God, You got our attention — now what?” He surveys a world of storms, earthquakes, and political upheaval, and asks the question he says people are really asking today: what is the point? He shares what people think about when they are alone, and he notes that many who once dismissed the Bible are now going back to it.

In the midst of all the change, he names four things that have not changed: the nature of God, the Word of God, human nature, and the way of salvation. The message closes with a call to change: to repent, to believe, and to follow Christ, followed by an invitation to come to Him.

About the Preacher

William “Billy” F. Graham Jr. (1918–2018) was one of the most widely known evangelists in history. He founded the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association in 1950 and, over the decades, preached live to nearly 215 million people in over 185 countries and territories.

He hosted the Hour of Decision radio program for more than 60 years and authored 33 books, including his 1997 autobiography, Just As I Am. His life’s work centred on one message: that God loves you and offers forgiveness and new life through Jesus Christ.

Key Scripture

Hebrews 12:27–29

“And this word, Yet once more, signifieth the removing of those things that are shaken, as of things that are made, that those things which cannot be shaken may remain. Wherefore we receiving a kingdom which cannot be moved, let us have grace, whereby we may serve God acceptably with reverence and godly fear: for our God is a consuming fire.”

This is the text the message is built on: when everything around us is shaken, what cannot be shaken remains, and God Himself does not change.
